No More Judicial Activism
In 2000, over 60% of California voters decided we wanted to protect the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. We didn’t want some judge or politician telling us we had to go along with their radical altering of the family unit and society. But despite our clear decision on the matter, four members of the California Supreme Court overturned our vote.
The judicial system has gotten out of control. We elect our representatives and use the initiative process to pass laws in this state. It is completely outside the jurisdiction of the court to redefine social relationships like marriage for all of society. On November 4th, voters need to send another message to these arrogant judges: you will not redefine marriage for us and our children.
Vote Yes on Proposition 8 for our Children
Politicians often use the phrase, "It's for the children" to garner public support in passing laws, spending more taxpayer money and regulating the behavior of citizens. Every law we pass will impact current and future generations. But there are only a handful of issues that will affect children as directly and significantly as the definition of marriage.
What many voters fail to understand about allowing same-sex marriage is that it will radically alter our culture—which will impact children the most severely. Without Proposition 8, children will be taught in public schools that same-sex marriage is just as beneficial to society as heterosexual marriage. Students with religious or traditional beliefs could be reprimanded for sharing their “bigoted” values at school. Even kindergarten students would be exposed to sexual relationships such as same-sex marriage.
In a culture that inundates our children with sexual messages much too early, we cannot afford to allow controversial sexual matters to be taught to even our kindergartners. We must vote YES on Proposition 8.
Same-sex Marriages will Trump Freedom of Religion and Speech
Lost in all the debate about letting adults who love each other marry whomever they desire is the real debate so crucial to our society: whether “love” will trump our Constitutional rights. Without Proposition 8, Californians—and Americans—will be on a slippery slope to allowing sexual relationships to take precedent over the true fundamental rights our Founding Fathers fought so valiantly for: freedoms of speech and religion.
If a student declares their support for traditional marriage in the classroom, they could be reprimanded for their “bigoted” beliefs. What happened to freedom of speech—especially in an academic setting? If pastors, rabbis or other clergy refuse to officiate a same-sex marriage ceremony, they could be prosecuted under anti-discrimination laws. What happened to freedom of religion—especially in the church?
Our nation was founded on these fundamental rights—that’s why they are in the Bill of Rights. Proposition 8 is much bigger than just the marriage issue. This is a struggle between big brother government and our freedom. I stand for freedom and will vote YES on Proposition 8 on November 4.
